Plan your visit Auschwitz

The Auschwitz Museum is located in Oświęcim – about 60 km from Krakow. The grounds of the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau camps are available to visitors. Auschwitz is the Memorial Place where over 1.1 million people died, in a camp set up by the German Nazis, in a death camp. The complex of extermination camps also included Auschwitz Monowitz and about 50 sub-camps.

How long do you need for Auschwitz Birkenau Tour?

A basic tour of both camps (Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau) usually takes about 3.5 hours. The tour is divided into 2 parts, it should last about 2 hours in the first part, and about 1.5 hours in the second part. Visiting times may change due to unforeseen circumstances, delays, group size, or temporary shutdowns of exhibitions.

Moving between camps The Auschwitz I & Auschwitz II Birkenau

Due to the fact that the tour is divided into 2 parts, and both Camps are located several kilometers apart, after visiting the Auschwitz I Camp, you should go to the Auschwitz II Birkenau camp. In the case of a trip (here is a link to our trip with a bus), you travel by our transport and with our guardian.
Camp 1 is mainly a tour of the camp blocks, i.e. most of the sightseeing is inside, outside is mainly when moving between buildings.Visiting Auschwitz II Birkenau takes place entirely outside, so it is worth dressing appropriately for the conditions outside.

How to get to Birkenau from Auschwitz

If you buy a tour with transport, the traffic between the camps is the same vehicle you travel from Krakow. If you buy tickets with an on-site meeting at the Museum, you can travel by free museum bus or in your own vehicle. There is a car park near the entrance to Auschwitz I, where the bus leaves. In Birkenau there is also a car park for buses and passenger cars.

Taking pictures

Photography is allowed throughout almost the entire museum, but flash photography is prohibited inside the buildings. There are also two places where photography is not allowed. Your guide during the tour will show you exactly which places. You will also see signs informing you that photography is prohibited.

Other information

  • There are toilets in both the Auschwitz I Museum and Auschwitz II Birkenau. Toilets are paid.
  • Please remember that the Museum is a Memorial Site where the extermination camps were located and you should dress appropriately for the type of this place.
  • There are restaurants at the Museum, but usually there is not much time to use them. We recommend taking something with you for the duration of the trip or a short break between visiting both Camps.

Book your visit in advance

Tickets for visiting Auschwitz can be purchased via the website or at the Museum ticket office. Due to the great interest of visitors to the Museum in Oświęcim, it is worth purchasing them in advance.

The number of tickets to the Museum is limited, they include admission limits to Auschwitz.

Tickets on the website are available 90 days in advance, tours with local operators can usually be booked up to a year in advance.
